Nominations open through March 31
(CHICAGO)—The 26th Annual Studs Terkel Community Media Awards will take place online Thursday, May 13, 2021, three days before what would have been Terkel’s 109th birthday.
Nominations for this year’s awards will remain open through March 31. Any submitted in 2020 will be included. Click here to see a list of past winners. Originally scheduled to happen in the fall of 2020 and postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the first time the awards will be held online.
“After a year of producing online events, we’re looking forward to exploring the possibilities of a virtual Terkel Awards. It’s a challenge, but an exciting one.” said Mareva Lindo, coordinator of the Awards.

Once chosen by Studs himself, today the Terkel Awards are chosen by a committee of past winners. Since 1994, the Terkel Awards have honored over 90 journalists whose work is driven by service and connection to their communities. Named for Chicago radio, television, and storytelling legend Louis “Studs” Terkel, past honorees include Lee Bey, Carol Marin, and Deborah Douglas (pictured at left alongside fellow 2019 Terkel winners Britt Julious, Annie Sweeney, and Jerome McDonnell).

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated that May 16th would have been Terkel’s 111th birthday. It would have been his 109th. The post has been updated to reflect that.
