Celebration of Change

On Thursday, September 24, at 5:30 p.m., we're excited to introduce new partners and a fresh approach to changing narratives, in our first-ever Celebration of Change! Registration is free for this online event. The annual Studs Terkel Community Media Awards, originally intended for this date, has been postponed to 2021 (details TBD).

Building on the organization’s past work, Public Narrative is repositioning its approach to engaging community voices on public health, public safety, and public education.

To kick off the event, Deborah Douglas (Terkel Award Winner, Pulliam Visiting Professor of Journalism at DePauw University) will moderate the Reconciling the Moment panel featuring: Michelle Duster (Author, Professor, Public Historian & Great-Granddaughter of Ida B. Wells-Barnett), Marti Tippens Murphy (Executive Director, Facing History and Ourselves - Memphis), and Karin Berry (General Editor, ESPN’s The Undefeated).

In our Public Health panel, Towards Health Equity through Community Engagement, Jen Brown (Director & Co-Founder, Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities) will moderate a conversation featuring: Taneka Jennings (Deputy Director, HANA Center), Phyllis Rodgers (Founder & Executive Director, Peer Plus Education and Training Advocates), and Darius Tandon, (Co-Director, Center for Community Health at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine).

For our Public Education panel, Chris Goins (Chief Equity Officer & MBK Impact Community Leader at ThriveChicago) will moderate a conversation around Changing the Narrative for Boys and Young Men of Color, featuring: Brenda Williams (Founder of My GPS) Jessica Ramos (Director of Community Engagement at Advance Illinois), and Brandon Pope (Anchor/Reporter at CW26 Chicago & VP of Broadcast for NABJ-Chicago).
